Take a chance on a vacation home

By Chantal Eustace, For The Province February 27, 2011

Interior designer Andrea Harte says nature inspired the stylish look of the Kelowna prize home she decorated, one of three B.C. getaway homes up for grabs in the Royal Columbia Hospital Foundation's new lottery.

And she's thrilled with how the lake-facing Kelowna condominium turned out. "It's quite a 'wow' home."

So are the other two vacation properties to be won in the B.C. Vacation Home Lottery: a dreamy Parksville beach pad and a Pan Pacific condominium right in the heart of Whistler.

Each vacation home is fully furnished and ready to be used by a lucky winner who will also walk away with cash.

In the case of the Kelowna package, the prize is worth more than $1 million, and includes the vacation home, $100,000 in cash, a boat, an SUV and a golf package.

The home packages are among more than 1,700 prizes to be won -they range from trips to cars, and are part of an attempt to raise badly needed funds for one of the province's busiest hospitals.

"This is the only lottery in B.C. that has three grand prizes. The winner doesn't have to choose one of them. There are three grand-prize winners," says Adrienne Bakker, president of the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation.

And she says, not only do you get a chance to win a vacation home, you also get to help the hospital save lives. Money raised from the lottery will support emergency and trauma services, Bakker says, adding it's hoped that at least $1 million will be raised for the hospital, which treats about 10,000 trauma patients each year.

Bakker says the idea for a B.C. vacation home lottery came about after plenty of research, Internet polls and focus groups.

People in B.C. were most interested in owning vacation spots in their own province, she says.

All three locations selected were very popular, she says, adding Kelowna, Parksville and Whistler each offer lots of things, to do as well as the opportunity to just relax.

"These are very attractive areas for people to vacation in the province," says Bakker.

Each home boasts a wonderful view too, she says, from the water in Parksville and Kelowna to the world-famous mountain scenery of Whistler.

And, Bakker says, each home's decor suits its unique, natural setting.

The 906-square-foot Whistler condo in the Pan Pacific was already furnished, but the Parksville and Kelowna homes were put together especially for the contest.

"We paid very special attention to how they were decorated and the quality of furnishings and contemporary design," says Bakker.

Interior designer Teresa Ryback of TDSwansburg Design Studio says she took inspiration from the white sand and the "almost tropical" beaches of Parksville.

"We really wanted the suite to have a relaxed feeling," says Ryback. "[The winner] will feel it's a home away from home."

The 1,378 square-foot, two-bedroom apartment features plenty of nods to its ocean-facing location, like the seashell accents used in the master bathroom and the wood tables in the living room.

"All of the details you see, it's all pulled from the beach," Ryback says, adding even the creamy paint on the walls is a nod to the colour of sand.

A large, watery painting in the living room ties everything together, she says.

"That painting carries in all the colours of the suite," Ryback says. "And that's also what Parksville looks like."

Harte, of Kelowna-based Habitat Interiors, says it was important to create a design that would complement - and not compete with -the big views in the 1,185-square-foot Kelowna apartment, located on the 25th floor.

"There are floor-to-ceiling windows and this stunning lake view," says Harte, adding the property also looks out to a bird sanctuary and a nearby marina.

To maximize views, she says, she and her team limited the use of patterns so the eye would extend into the view, not stop on the patterns.

(However, bold touches, like a zebra-print rug and geometric artwork, were used to brighten in interior spaces like the den and bathroom, she says.)
